The 40th National Farmer’s Day celebration in the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality took place on November 8, 2024, at the Boako Community Park. The event honored the dedication and contributions of farmers and fishers in the Municipality, with 14 award categories recognizing outstanding efforts in agriculture.
The Overall Municipal Best Farmer, Mr. Edward Tetteh from Sefwi Asawinso, was awarded a brand-new motor tricycle donated by Asante Gold Chirano Ltd, along with cutlasses, knapsack sprayers, fertilizers, and other farming tools. The second-best farmer, Mr. Osei George from Suiano, received a motorbike from the Municipal Assembly and additional farming supplies. Mrs. Akua Mantabia from Bechewa was named the Best Woman Farmer, receiving a refrigerator, fabric, silver set, and farming tools.
Other awardees in categories such as Best Crop Farmer, Best Livestock Farmer, and Best Youth Farmer received items including televisions, cutlasses, sprayers, fertilizers, and Wellington boots. Schools and farmer-based organizations (FBOs) also received recognition for their contributions to agriculture.
The event saw participation from notable dignitaries, including Nana Asante Kwao II, Chairman of the occasion; Hon. Louis Owusu Agyapong, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE); and representatives from political parties, local authorities, and various organizations. Chiefs, farmers, students, and the general public also graced the event.
In his keynote address, Hon. Louis Owusu Agyapong emphasized the importance of adapting to climate change, aligning with the event’s theme, “Building Climate-Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security.” He highlighted government initiatives such as Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ), irrigation projects under One Village, One Dam, and mechanization centers providing affordable farming equipment.
The MCE also encouraged farmers to leverage the government’s increased cocoa prices by adopting proper farm management practices to boost yields.
Both parliamentary candidates, Hon. Kofi Benteh Afful (NDC) and Hon. Festus Bumakama Agyapong (NPP), addressed the audience, urging their supporters to maintain peace during the upcoming elections.
In his closing remarks, Nana Asante Kwao II called for more agricultural staff in the municipality and encouraged voters to participate peacefully in the December 7 elections.
The event concluded successfully, with award winners celebrated for their hard work and dedication to ensuring food security in the municipality. The Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Assembly, with support from sponsors like Asante Gold Chirano Ltd and Buadak Company, delivered a memorable and impactful Farmer’s Day celebration.
