SWMA MARKS 2024 WORLD DISABILITY DAY

The Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Assembly on 3rd December, 2024 marked this year’s World Disability Day with a special event aimed at promoting the inclusion and well-being of persons with disabilities. As part of the celebration, the municipal leadership, in collaboration with stakeholders, presented white canes to members of the Ghana Federation of Disabled (GFD) to enhance their mobility and independence.

The event, which brought together people with disabilities, government officials, and representatives from civil society organizations, was held under the theme "Promoting Disability Inclusion for a Sustainable Future." Speakers at the program emphasised the need for equal opportunities, accessibility, and support for persons with disabilities in education, employment, and social life.

Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Louis Owusu Agyepong commended the Ghana Federation of the Disabled for its advocacy and pledged the assembly’s commitment to supporting disability-friendly initiatives. “Today’s donation of white canes symbolizes our dedication to empowering visually impaired individuals. We will continue to push for policies that ensure an inclusive society for all,” the MCE stated.

The chairman of the Sefwi Wiawso branch of the Ghana Federation of the Disabled, Mr. Isaac Nkuah expressed gratitude for the support and called for more interventions to address challenges faced by blind and visually impaired persons. “The white canes will significantly improve our mobility, but we also need more efforts towards accessible infrastructure, education, and employment opportunities,” he noted.

Several beneficiaries shared their appreciation, highlighting how white canes would positively impact their daily lives. The event concluded with cultural performances and an awareness march aimed at sensitizing the public on the rights and abilities of persons with disabilities.

World Disability Day, observed annually on December 3, seeks to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities across the world while raising awareness about challenges they face.
